Exploring Surrogacy Abroad? Here Are Practical Tips to Get Started

Written by: Sam Everingham

Most people exploring surrogacy abroad start in the same place: They know they want to be parents, but they are not sure which country, which clinic, or even which first step makes sense.

If you’re at that stage, the priority is not choosing a destination. It’s understanding how the pieces fit together so you don’t make early decisions that limit your options later.

After many years working with intended parents across different countries, I can say with confidence that the strongest journeys begin with clarity, not urgency.

Start With Your Situation, Not a Destination

One of the first instincts is to search for the “best country” for surrogacy. But that question only makes sense once you understand your own circumstances.

Different countries suit different families. Your budget, your timeline, your relationship status, your medical history, and how involved you want to be during the pregnancy all matter. Rather than jumping straight into comparing destinations, take time to clarify what matters most to you. That clarity will narrow the field naturally.

Understand That Surrogacy Is Not One Single Process

Surrogacy abroad is often talked about as if it’s one neat package. In reality, it’s a coordination of medical treatment, legal frameworks, cross border logistics, and human relationships.

And almost always, it involves IVF. Even if fertility is not the issue that brought you here, embryos need to be created before a surrogate can carry a pregnancy. That introduces decisions about clinics, egg donors if needed, genetic testing, and storage. You don’t need to master all of this at the beginning, but you do need to recognise that IVF is foundational, not optional.

Intended parents sometimes underestimate how much their IVF protocol can influence the surrogacy process. Screening requirements, laboratory standards, and how embryos are frozen can determine whether they are accepted by a clinic overseas. Aligning medical planning with your intended destination from the outset can prevent costly delays and the need to repeat treatment.

Think About Embryos Early

Where embryos are created can influence everything that follows.

Some families create embryos in their home country and later ship them overseas. Others complete IVF in the same country where the surrogacy will take place. Each path has implications for cost, regulation, transport, and timing.

It’s important to understand how closely IVF and surrogacy planning are connected. Decisions made early can either simplify or complicate the journey later.

Before you choose a surrogacy program, you need to understand your embryo plan. Where embryos are created, what screening is done, whether genetic testing is required by the destination country, and how embryos can legally and safely be transported all affect your options. These are medical decisions, but they have practical consequences as well.

Be Careful with Online Promises

There is a vast amount of information online. Some of it is helpful. Some of it is marketing. Some of it is outdated.

You will see programs described as simple, guaranteed, or universally suitable. In my experience, surrogacy abroad is rarely simple, and it’s never one size fits all. Use early research to build context, not to lock yourself into a path. The goal at this stage is understanding, not commitment.

Clarify Eligibility Sooner Rather Than Later

One of the most practical early steps is confirming where you’re actually eligible.

Laws differ, clinic policies differ, and agency criteria differ. Eligibility can depend on marital status, sexual orientation, age, medical background, and citizenship.

I have seen intended parents spend months exploring a country only to discover later that it was not a viable option for them. A clear eligibility assessment early on can save significant time and emotional energy.

Expect Your Plan to Evolve

Very few people map out their entire surrogacy journey from day one.

As you learn more, your priorities may shift. A country that looked appealing at first may feel less suitable once you understand the legal process. A different option may emerge that better aligns with your embryos, timeline, or long-term plans.

This is normal. Exploration is part of the process.

“Changing direction does not mean you have failed. It means you have gathered better information. The goal is not to commit quickly, but to commit wisely. Taking time to reassess can ultimately protect your investment, your timeline, and your peace of mind.”

Seek Guidance Before You Commit

In the early stage, what most people need is perspective. A balanced insight into how the pieces fit together, what the risks are, and how IVF decisions intersect with surrogacy pathways.

A thoughtful conversation at the beginning can prevent costly missteps later.

Exploring surrogacy abroad is a significant step. Even if you’re only gathering information, you’re beginning to shape your future family. Take a breath, focus on what matters most to your family, and make your next step with intention. Clarity beats speed every time. When you start from a place of clarity rather than urgency, the path ahead becomes far more manageable.
