The Dangers of Finding a Surrogate in Colombia

Written by: Sam Everingham

When exploring surrogacy in Colombia, it’s normal to feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. You’re navigating a process that involves health, legal, and emotional factors in a country that may feel unfamiliar. But how do you know the surrogate is healthy and reliable?  These concerns are completely normal, and they underscore just how important it is to take a thoughtful, careful approach when choosing an agency in a country you may not know well.

The Impact of Good Surrogate Screening

Thorough surrogate screening matters because it affects the health, safety, and legal security of your future family. Potential risks if a surrogate isn’t the right fit include:

  • Medical complications: Undetected health issues could affect the pregnancy or the baby’s wellbeing.
  • Emotional stress: A surrogate who isn’t prepared for the psychological demands of surrogacy may struggle with attachment or stress, which can affect communication and decision-making.
  • Legal challenges: Colombian law allows surrogacy under strict rules. If a surrogate doesn’t meet these requirements, or contracts aren’t properly handled, parental rights and documentation could become complicated.
  • Mismatch in expectations: Differences in lifestyle, communication, or understanding of medical decisions can create tension during the pregnancy.

Understanding Surrogate Matching in Colombia

Insights and guidance to help you navigate surrogate matching confidently in Colombia.

Challenges of Engaging from Abroad

Trusting a surrogate in another country can feel overwhelming. You’re giving control of a deeply personal and complex journey to others, relying on information you may not fully understand, and trying to make life-changing decisions across borders. On top of that, there’s the natural worry about whether the person carrying your child is healthy, reliable, and fully prepared for the process.

For these reasons, we do not recommend trying to find a surrogate on your own. Professional guidance is essential. Agencies with experience in Colombian surrogacy can help with the necessary screening, ensure legal compliance, and provide the support needed to reduce risk for both you and the surrogate.

Not All Agencies Are Equal

While working with an agency may make finding a surrogate a lot safer, it’s important to know that agencies’ approaches and standards can vary significantly. Even when agencies promise comprehensive screening, support, and legal guidance, their claims aren’t always the full story. It’s essential to seek independent advice rather than relying solely on marketing or sales language.

Consider these points when evaluating agencies:

  • Understand what their current case load is. A number of agencies have a large backlog of cases, meaning very long wait times to match
  • Verify their experience: How long have they worked with Colombian surrogates, and do they have a track record that can be independently verified
  • Ask about screening rigor: Make sure they follow thorough medical, psychological, and legal checks, not just the minimum required.
  • Look for transparency: Are costs, processes, and responsibilities clearly explained, or is the information vague?
  • Seek third-party perspectives: Talk to consultants who understand Colombian surrogacy before making decisions.
  • Don’t be swayed by promises or polished sales language: Words like “full support” or “risk-free” don’t replace verified evidence and careful evaluation.

Approaching agencies critically ensures you make informed decisions and choose a partner who genuinely meets the standards needed for a safe and supported surrogacy journey.
